Certification

Obtaining certification for the benefit of our businesses and our grower communities

Rift Valley endeavours to obtain certification from relevant organisations wherever possible. While this is an ongoing exercise throughout the Group, the Tea Platform has already obtained certification from a number of bodies.

FairtradeAll Rift Valley tea estates have been Fairtrade certified since the 1990’s. FLOCERT audits the estates on an annual basis to ensure the company is using best practices relating to employment, treatment of staff, health care, occupational health and safety, and the general welfare of its staff and dependents. Where teas are sold as Fairtrade, an US$0.50/kg premium is paid to the producer’s employees trust, operated by a democratically elected Joint Body. The premium money paid into this account is then allocated to various projects, both within the estates, and to the outside local community. Projects include education, social welfare, health care and loans to local SME’s. Over the years, the company has sponsored the construction of schools and community centres, and has contribute to additional equipment at hospitals. Outside the estates, Fairtrade funds have supported the upgrading of village schools with desks and essential equipment, the drilling of boreholes to provide villages with potable water, the building of secondary schools and the roll-out of HIV/Aids programs.
